It is not uncommon to encounter buildings with structural irregularities. Plan layout, aesthetics, space planning and other issues often result in these irregularities, the presence of which leads to code required modeling and detailing enhancements that are not often discussed in practical design guides or textbooks on lateral design. This course fills that void by fully explaining how and why building irregularities impact structural design and by providing detailed examples of how to appropriately analyze and design lateral force resisting elements for various types of irregular buildings located in Seismic Design Category (SDC) B and D. Detailed design examples are provided for the following irregular buildings (specific irregularities apply to each building): Two-story steel-braced frame building with steel beams and columns and steel deck roof diaphragm, Two-story steel-braced frame building with steel beams and columns and concrete-filled steel deck floor diaphragms, Two-story building with wood-framed shear walls with structural panels, glue-laminated girders and wood-frame roof and floor diaphragms, Four-story concrete building with concrete diaphragms

  • Textbook, Guide to the Design for Common Irregularities in Buildings
  • Binder of complete course notes and example problems worked

Timothy Wayne Mays, Ph.D., P.E. is President of SE/ES and an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Dr. Mays recently served as Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Associations of South Carolina and North Carolina. He currently serves as NCSEA Publications Committee Chairman. He has received two national teaching awards (ASCE and NSPE) and both national (NSF) and regional (ASEE) awards for outstanding research. He is the recipient of the 2009 NCSEA Service Award. He is a prolific speaker who sits on several code writing committees and his areas of expertise are code applications, structural design, seismic design, steel connections, structural dynamics, and civil engineering aspects of antiterrorism
