SOFL Chapter Dinner Meeting::

Presentation Title: "Wind, Water, Codes, Coverage, Myths & Reality"

Wind and water damage from high wind events relating to fenestrations and the building envelope will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the effects from Hurricane Irma 2017. Topics will include Design issues, Code issues, Construction issues and Insurance issues. Discussion will take place regarding the questions of: How did it happen? Why did it happen? and Did it actually happen? At my request, a water intrusion workgroup has been appointed by the Florida Building Commission to study the issues of water intrusion that took place during Hurricane Irma. An update on the workgroup's progress will be discussed.

Dan Lavrich attended the United States Air Force Academy and received a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from Florida Atlantic University.  He is the principal of Lavrich & Associates, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a licensed Professional Engineer in Florida and Georgia.  Over a period of more than 40 years he has personally been responsible for the Structural and Civil Engineering design of several thousand projects consisting of single and multi-family residential buildings, office buildings, shopping centers, industrial buildings, warehouses, schools, restaurants, piers, seawalls, swimming pools, prisons, and related site work and facilities.

Dan is a Member and Past President of the Florida Structural Engineers Association (FSEA), Fellow Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Charter Member and Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE, Member of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Current Chair of the Broward County Board of Rules & Appeals, Member of the State of Florida Building Code Structural Technical Advisory Committee (Structural TAC), and has actively participated in Building Code Development in the State of Florida since 1990.

His practice is now limited to forensic and investigative engineering regarding claims and assessments of damage, construction defects, and Building Code issues. He has personally inspected more than 500 significant Hurricane damage claims in Florida over the last 30 years.
